Credit Enrolment Units
Credit Enrolment Units (CEUs) help schools expand the types of programs students can take to help meet the 100 credit requirement of an Alberta high school diploma; they offer flexibility in programming while also ensuring quality instruction and fair allocation of funding no matter where a student lives.
Credit Enrolment Units allow schools to tailor programming to meet the needs of students directly. Students can take courses through a variety of delivery methods and programs, some of which include self-directed instructional packages, on-line, blended delivery (a combination of classroom based and on-line instruction), and the Registered Apprenticeship Program.
CEU Funding
CEU funding is a conditional grant for high school courses that has a series of reasonable expectations. School boards receive CEU funding for courses which meet basic requirements, such as, a minimum final mark and following an approved Alberta program of study. Funding is ongoing and is allocated to school jurisdictions at several points during the school year.
Funding is granted for a variety of course delivery situations which meet funding and programming requirements; in each, student learning is the focus. These include, but are not limited to:
- At least 25 hours per credit of learning in a face-to-face classroom environment where a certificated teacher leads instruction.
- Work studies programs where learning takes place in a non-traditional environment.
- Blended delivery of a course using a combination of online and face-to-face learning.
Schools and school jurisdictions are provided with an understanding of funding and programming requirements through many venues, including the following:
- educational presentations by Alberta Education to school and school board staff,
- correspondence to all superintendents, high school principals and secretary-treasurers through an educational Bulletin (in October 2005, April 2006 and January 2007),
- regular Field Services Director's Reports,
- the Funding Manual for School Authorities, and
- the Guide to Education: ECS to Grade 12.
