2009 Education Satisfaction Survey
The 2009 Satisfaction with Education in Alberta Survey is a set of nine surveys conducted to assess satisfaction with key features of Alberta's education system. The surveys obtained opinions from senior high school students, parents of K-12 students, parents of children with severe special needs, teachers, school board trustees, principals and the public. The surveys also obtained opinions from self-identified Aboriginal senior high school students and parents of self-identified Aboriginal students.

Key Findings

All principals (100%) followed by a high proportion of teachers (97%), school board trustees (95%), students (94%), and parents (K-12: 89%, severe special needs: 87%) were satisfied with the quality of teaching at schools.

99% of principals, 98% of students, 96% of teachers, 95% of school board trustees, 90% of parents of K-12 students, 82% of parents of children with severe special needs, and 77% of the public were satisfied with the quality of education.

95% of principals, 93% of teachers, 91% of school board trustees, and 81% of parents of K-12 students and parents of children with severe special needs were satisfied with the opportunity for parental involvement in decisions at school.

94% of school board trustees, 88% of principals, 80% of teachers, 74% of parents of K-12 students and 64% of parents of children with severe special needs indicated that the quality of education at schools has improved or stayed the same in the past 3 years.

92% of principals, 85% of teachers, 79% of school board trustees, 73% of parents of K-12 students and 50% of the public were satisfied that students are taught attitudes and behaviours to be successful at work when they leave school.

90% of teachers and 82% of parents of K-12 students were satisfied that students are taught the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for lifelong learning.

89% of principals, 83% of school board trustees, 77% of teachers, 48% of public, and 42% of parents of K-12 students were satisfied that students demonstrate attitudes and behaviours to be successful at work when they leave school.

88% of principals, 83% of school board trustees, 74% of teachers and 69% of parents of K-12 students indicated that the quality of the Alberta K to 12 System has improved or stayed the same in the past 3 years.

81% of parents of children with severe special needs, 79% of parents of K-12 students and 65% of the public were satisfied that they are receiving value for money spent in schools.

72% of principals and school board trustees, 63% of teachers, 60% of parents of K-12 students and 55% of the public agreed that the leadership at the provincial level effectively supports and facilitates teaching and learning.

68% of principals, 62% of teachers, 55% of parents of K-12 students and parents of children with severe special needs, 54% of school board trustees, and 51% of the public agreed that Alberta’s Education system communicates effectively with the public.
FNMI Results

98% of self-identified Aboriginal students and 90% of parents of self-identified Aboriginal students were satisfied with the quality of education.

95% of self-identified Aboriginal students and 85% of parents of self-identified Aboriginal students were satisfied with the quality of teaching at schools.

76% of parents of self-identified Aboriginal students were satisfied that students are taught attitudes and behaviours to be successful at work when they leave school. 48% of them were satisfied that students demonstrate attitudes and behaviours to be successful at work when they leave school.
