Cycle Two [10309 ]         Norwood Child & Family Resource Centre
Title: Multi-Cultural Project
Keywords: Parental/Community Involvement, School Culture/Climate,
Major Focus Area: None         Grade Level: All Grade Levels,
Brief Description

Honouring and celebrating the diverse cultural backgrounds of our families in our program is the purpose of this project.

Parents participate and lead cultural activities by cooking traditional dishes, wearing traditional costumes, and sharing ethnic artifacts and music from home countries.  Students gain a deeper appreciation for the diversity of cultures that form the classroom and school community and are able to share their own cultural heritage with pride.

Key Features

Through sharing cultural traditions, food, and the arts, students and staff increase their knowledge about, and comfort with people of other cultures.

Parents play an active role in teaching the classroom learning community about their ethnic and cultural background, and also are active learners about other cultures represented in our classrooms.

Evidence of Effectiveness Teachers report that student participation, attitudes, and conversations  indicate that they have an enhanced appreciation for and knowledge of other cultures represented in their classroom. Parent surveys and teacher observations are used to measure the positive and supportive attitude between and among students, parents, and teachers.
Additional Information This project has been very successful because we engage in cultural activity days in the classrooms, including cooking, music, dancing, sharing of stories, and crafts.   We also have purchased cultural books, posters, resources, music, decorations, costumes, and have asked parents to share their own artifacts. This exposure demonstrates to staff and students that our program is dedicated to honouring and respecting a variety of cultures all the time, not just during the appointed "AISI" time.

We have taken our learning outside the school by going on field trips to attend culturally relevant events in the city of Edmonton.  In so doing, we have provided amazing learning opportunities to our students, their families, and school staff.
