About the Project

The goals of Curriculum Redesign are to develop:

  • revised standards and guidelines for future curriculum (programs of study, assessment, and learning and teaching resources), and
  • revised processes for curriculum development.

Context for Change

Alberta has an excellent education system, but our world has changed. By acknowledging and responding to these changes, we are ensuring that we continue to prepare students well. Inspiring Education provides an opportunity to plan for improvements to future curriculum to make it more relevant and engaging for students now and in the future.

Curriculum Redesign is an opportunity to review curriculum and its development process to ensure that curriculum remains current and relevant. The redesigned standards and processes for future curriculum will respond to the attributes of today’s instantly connected learners. Available information and communications technologies must be leveraged to support learning experiences that challenge and engage today's learners, and must be equally leveraged when developing curriculum.

What will success look like?

The outcome of Curriculum Redesign will be the creation of a Curriculum Development Framework that will be used to guide the development of future curriculum. New curriculum that is inspiring and student-centred will support the development of competencies for living, learning and working in the 21st century.

It is our intent and expectation that a Curriculum Development Framework will achieve:

  • efficiencies in curriculum development and distribution
  • enhanced access to curriculum that is supported by technology
  • curriculum that supports flexible timing, pacing and learning environments
  • curriculum that supports a balanced approach to assessment, and
  • curriculum that supports a student-centred approach and inclusiveness for all learners.

As a result of the project, it is expected that:

  • staff and stakeholders will be satisfied that the new curriculum is engaging and meets the needs of all learners and educators
  • student performance on provincial, national and international tests will improve in subjects for which new curriculum standards have been used
  • Francophone and First Nations, Métis and Inuit representatives will be satisfied that the curriculum is sensitive to student learning needs
  • reduced time will be needed for a curriculum revision of a given size/complexity to be completed
  • stakeholders will have increased opportunities for engagement in the development process, and
  • students and teachers will be satisfied with the availability and quality of curriculum that supports meeting individual and local needs.
