High School Completion Rates

Updated September 2008

Alberta high school completion rates are calculated by tracking Grade 10 students for three, four and five years and determining the percentages of students who have completed high school in each timeframe.

Students are considered high school completers if they have received a high school diploma or equivalent, or have enrolled in an Alberta post-secondary institution or apprenticeship program within the tracking period.

The three-year rate is the Accountability Pillar measure. The five year rate is the Ministry business plan measure. High school completion rate graph.

Notes:

  • An adjustment for attrition is applied using Statistics Canada estimates.
  • The rates for each year in the table above represent different Grade 10 cohorts. For example, for 2002/03 rates, the three-year rate is based on the 2000/01 Grade 10 cohort, the four-year rate is based on the 1999/2000 Grade 10 cohort and the five-year rate is based on the 1998/99 Grade 10 cohort. The four and five year rates for the 2000/01 Grade 10 cohort are reported in subsequent years, 2003/04 and 2004/05 respectively.
  • Detailed information on the calculation of high school completion rates is contained in the methodology document.
