Improving Albertans’ quality of life

Excellence in Teaching Awards finalists announced

Edmonton ...The 2007 Excellence in Teaching Awards Program is recognizing 130 Alberta teachers as award finalists, celebrating their outstanding creativity and innovation in our province's Kindergarten to Grade 12 education system.

Alberta Education Minister Ron Liepert said, “Being named a finalist is an acknowledgement from the local school community that these teachers are held in high esteem for their valuable and lasting contribution to the lives of their students.”

This year's finalists were chosen by a selection committee of representatives from Alberta 's education community from 320 eligible nominees. Finalists will receive an award certificate, which will be presented to them at local ceremonies held in their schools or communities.

From this group of finalists, 20 will be recipients of a Provincial Excellence in Teaching Award and 3 will be recipients of the SMARTer Kids Foundation Innovative Use of Technology Award. The 2007 award recipients will be honoured at a dinner and awards ceremony in Edmonton on May 12, 2007.

“The awards program is a terrific way to publicly recognize, thank and celebrate the great work teachers do in classrooms throughout Alberta,” said Liepert .

Since the inception of the awards program almost 8,000 teachers have been nominated and 400 have been award recipients. The 19 th annual Excellence in Teaching Awards is presented by Alberta Education with the support of the Alberta Home and School Councils' Association, the Alberta School Boards Association, The Alberta Teachers' Association, the Edmonton Journal, the SMARTer Kids Foundation and XEROX.

Collaborating with our education stakeholders to provide a high quality learning environment is part of Premier Ed Stelmach's plan to improve Albertans' quality of life. Other priorities are to govern with integrity and transparency, manage growth pressures, build a stronger Alberta , and provide safe and secure communities.
