Government to review board's books
Edmonton... Alberta Learning has made financial experts available to address funding concerns raised by the Edmonton Public School Board.
Members of the department's school finance division will continue to work closely with the board to examine the financial picture of all its operations, including those of individual schools.
"It is troubling to me that the board has taken steps to raise public fears about education funding without first working with the government to find ways to manage its finances," said Learning Minister Dr. Lyle Oberg, referring to the board's recent public announcement of a financial "crisis" in its schools. "We hope to help the board find efficiencies needed to ensure the least impact on students."
It was disappointing that the board chose a news conference to unnecessarily alarm parents and students without making every effort to work with the department to address ways to accommodate the 14 per cent teacher wage settlement and any other concerns the board may have, said Oberg.
