Education leaders to share innovative ideas for improving student learning
Edmonton... More than 500 Alberta teachers, parents, administrators and trustees will gather in Edmonton this week to compare notes and share ideas and effective practices that are enhancing learning for students.
On January 29 and 30, with a theme of Lessons Learned - Transforming Practice, the third Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI) conference will give participants the opportunity to learn and incorporate ideas from hundreds of AISI projects. Project topics include literacy, language arts, technology, mathematics, the teaching process and accommodation of diverse learning needs. This year's conference will feature 31 showcases and nine focus sessions.
"AISI is the result of the innovation, creativity and dedication of education professionals and parents and is a shining example of what makes our learning system one of the best in the world," said Learning Minister Dr. Lyle Oberg. "This conference offers another great opportunity to share success stories and ensure that, as AISI moves into its fourth year, it continues to help improve student learning."
There are currently 460 AISI projects underway. For the years 2000-03, there were 730 projects, which have concluded with positive results for improved student learning.
The Alberta government has allocated a total of $272 million since 2000-01 to support AISI, including $68 million in the 2003-04 school year.
AISI is a partnership between the Alberta Home and School Councils' Association, Alberta Learning, Alberta School Boards Association, Alberta Teachers' Association, Association of School Business Officials of Alberta, College of Alberta School Superintendents and Alberta Faculties of Education that focuses on ensuring student success.
The conference takes place at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Centre, 11834 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton.
