Invitation to Participate: Speak Up 2010

Alberta Education has arranged for all interested Alberta schools to participate in the Speak Up 2010 survey.  Each year Project Tomorrow, an education non-profit group, facilitates this survey.  It is an online research project that collects information on education, technology, 21st century skills and schools of the future.  Schools and school authorities can use the no-cost survey to gather information from students, parents, educators and community members. The survey opened on October 18.  The closing deadline has been extended to January 21, 2011.

Visit the Speak Up website to learn more about participating in the Speak Up 2010 survey.  The website includes how-to guides, lesson plans, promotion materials and more.  Log in information can be obtained from the Jurisdiction Technology Contacts (JTC) in each jurisdiction.

Raising a Digital Generation Parent Tutorial

Media Awareness Network has released e-Parenting Tutorial: Keeping up with your kids’ online activities, an online resource to help parents better understand and become actively involved in their children’s online lives.

This interactive tool helps parents increase their awareness of how children and teens are using the Internet for learning, entertainment and socializing, and the issues they may be encountering along the way. Through the exploration of five key themes – homework, cyberbullying, marketing, online relationships and excessive use – parents can develop the knowledge and skills they need to help their children navigate the Internet safely and wisely.

Tip sheets and links are available for parents on the website. The key message throughout is that parents need to talk with their kids about their online explorations and work together to develop ground rules that everyone can live with.

The e-Parenting Tutorial is available for free on Media Awareness Network’s web site. It is also available on Be Web Aware, an Internet safety web site for parents developed by Media Awareness Network in partnership with Bell.

Provincial Approach to Student Information (PASI) Update

The foundational elements of the Provincial Approach to Student Information (PASI), including student school enrolment data and student personal information through PASIprep, are now complete and the piloting of a PASI-enabled student information system is progressing well.

The PASI Team is focusing on the next capability and preparing for next year. One foundational element being considered is inclusion of high school course marks and Diploma Exam registrations.  Information regarding the 2011/2012 development plan will be communicated as it is available.

For general information and policy-related PASI questions, please call Sam Radke, PASI and Student Records Director, at 780‑427‑6930 (toll-free by first dialing 310‑0000) or by e-mail at Sam.Radke@gov.ab.ca.

Consultation on Professional Learning for Alberta Teachers

A consultation process is underway for the development of a provincial framework for professional learning in Alberta.  Education system stakeholders are invited to participate in the Alberta Education online consultation process.

Thirteen strategic directions have been identified which focus on ensuring the right people with the right skills are in the right places at the right times to meet the needs of Alberta’s learners.

The online consultation will be available until March 31, 2011.

A Guide to Support Implementation: Essential Conditions

Planning for successful implementation requires an understanding of the characteristics of successful implementation, coherence among plans and priorities and the intentional efforts of education stakeholders to collaboratively address the essential conditions.

A Guide to Support Implementation: Essential Conditions is a resource developed by a provincial working group of nine education partners to support implementation of any type of initiative.  Development of this guide was founded on the belief that successful implementation requires the coordinated, collaborative and comprehensive efforts of education partners working together towards a shared vision of learning success for all students.
