School Technology Sector Staffing Update

Senior Manager of Standards and Strategic Relationships

School Technology Sector is pleased to announce that Dave Hauschildt is the new Senior Manager of Standards and Strategic Relationships.

Dave originally joined Alberta Education in the School Technology Sector in November of 2007 as an Emerging Technologies Analyst. In that role, he managed the service management component of the School Technology Services program and managed SuperNet installations, as well as maintaining the SuperNet vendor relationships for the provincial K-12 sector. Prior to joining Alberta Education, he spent 12 years as an IT Director in two Alberta school jurisdictions -  Fort Vermilion School Division #52 and Grande Prairie Public School District #2357.

In his new role, Dave will be responsible for working collaboratively with stakeholders to develop provincial technology standards and policies, working with the vendor community, establishing Educational Standing Offers that add value to the system, and managing provincial licensing agreements. He will also continue to manage the SuperNet portfolio.

Advisor for Emerging Technologies

School Technology Sector also welcomes back Erwin Loewen who will be rejoining Alberta Education on secondment from Service Alberta.  In his role as Advisor for Emerging Technologies, Erwin will be working with both School Technology Sector and the Learning Resources Centre on a range of issues related to IT strategy development to support the future directions of the transformation agenda. 

Erwin has worked in government for over 28 years with his information technology experience spanning mainframe computing to microcomputers to local and wide-area networking as well as IT management duties.  Most recently he was Director of Voice and Video Services for Service Alberta as well as primary technical consultant for SuperNet Services.  Erwin previously spent 14 years at Alberta Education, 11 with School Technology Sector in technical advisory and management roles, working with both K-12 and post-secondary IT staff throughout the province.  He was instrumental in bringing SuperNet to all schools and helping to enable videoconferencing throughout the K-12 environment.

Provincial Approach to Student Information (PASI) Update

A Provincial Approach to Student Information (PASI) Usage Agreement clarifying the responsibilities of Alberta Education and school authorities and ensuring appropriate security and privacy measures has been drafted.  This agreement will be presented to the Association of School Business Officials of Alberta (ASBOA) and Jurisdiction Technology Contacts (JTC) in May.

Media Awareness Network Update

The Media Awareness Network (MNet) has developed My World, a digital literacy tutorial for secondary students to teach essential digital literacy skills through simulating their favourite online experiences.  The tutorial is divided into four sections:  researching and authenticating online information, managing privacy and reputation, dealing with online relationships and using digital media in an ethical manner.

Licenses for individual schools, districts, Faculties of Education and Universities or Colleges can be purchased through MNet.

Speak Up 2010

The Speak Up survey is an online research project, facilitated by Project Tomorrow, that collects information annually on education, technology, 21st Century skills, and schools of the future. Schools and school authorities use the no-cost survey to gather information from students, parents, educators and community members. Participating Alberta schools and school authorities can now access their Speak Up 2010 district/school reports online.

LearnAlberta.ca Update

Video Update

The quality and reliability of video delivery from LearnAlberta.ca has been improved. Last fall, Alberta Education’s Digital Design and Resource Authorization Branch embarked on reworking the video delivery system to address technical issues with the QuickTime for Windows Player and to take advantage of advances in video streaming technology that allows much improved video playback for the end user. The revision of all 3,500 videos is now completed.

Central Alberta Regional Consortium is presenting a technology conference in Red Deer on April 20 and 21, 2011, which will feature Dr. Alec Couros and Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach.

WiFi Tablet Symposium

Alberta Technology Leaders in Education (ATLE) is planning two WiFi Tablet Symposiums.  One will be held in Lethbridge and the other in Grande Prairie.
