Ten Years of Tech.News!

In August of 2001, Tech.News made its debut as a newsletter to provide education sector stakeholders with timely information about learning and technology in Alberta.  The newsletter was sent out by email without graphics to keep it as small as possible for those who were still using dial-up.

Technology Ten Years Ago

Many of the technologies that are taken for granted now were only developed in the past decade.  Technology in 2001 was beginning to change the way people communicated, learned and were entertained.

Ten Back-to-School Ideas

The Alberta education community is transforming learning and teaching in Alberta schools.  This transformation is enhanced through the use of technology.  As the new school year begins, Tech.News has compiled a list of ten ways for you to participate in this transformation.

iPads: What are we learning?

In response to significant interest in the province regarding the use of iPads to support learning and teaching, School Technology Sector will be hosting an event - iPads: What are we learning? -  on Monday, October 3, 2011.  This event will provide an opportunity for early adopters to engage in dialogue about the opportunities, emerging lessons learned and challenges presented by the implementation of iPads in schools.   Registration will be restricted to participants (both technical and educational personnel) who have already been involved in implementing iPads or will be doing so in the 2011/2012 school year.  The findings from the day will be shared with all stakeholders to inform others who are considering going down this path.

To express interest in receiving an invitation or learn more about the event, contact Ralph Luedtke at Ralph.Luedtke@gov.ab.ca or by phone at 780-427-6961 (toll-free outside of Edmonton by dialing 310-0000 first).

  • Microsoft’s Home Use Program for Office;

Provincial Approach to Student Information First Anniversary

The Provincial Approach to Student Information (PASI) Team is proud to announce PASI’s First Anniversary.  From its launch in September 2010, the PASI team sincerely appreciates school authorities’ support and recognizes the extra effort, dedication, collaboration and participation that school technology and other school authority personnel have contributed during the first year.

The past year has seen completion of a number of enhancements to the PASI Enrolment function, many of which are based upon feedback from school technology staff and other leaders, including:

  • Work item enhancements
    • Automatically applying student personal updates as appropriate; and
    • Refined student enrolment processing rules (age/grade, ESL inconsistencies, overlapping enrolments).
  • New PASIprep enrolment capability to select and view all or a selected subset of student enrolments in a school or school authority; users can also export the selected students into Excel or create a SIS file for uploading into PASI core.
  • New capability to manage enrolments (add, modify, delete) using the select capability.
  • Pre-registration and year end rollover functions.

As PASI moves forward with Phase 2, the next major milestone is the collection of high school marks in January 2012.

Lastly, the PASI team encourages all school authorities as they proceed with their due diligence of defining/refining and implementing their security and privacy processes and procedures in preparation for signing the PASI Usage Agreement.

Research

Alberta Education’s School Technology Sector is continually monitoring research on best practices in the use of technology for learning and teaching.  Research articles or reports from outside sources that may be pertinent to the work of tech.news subscribers will occasionally be included in this newsletter.  The information in the articles or reports does not necessarily reflect the opinion of Alberta Education.

PISA 2009 Results:  Students Online:  Digital Technologies and Performance (2011)

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) conducts surveys of key competencies of 15-year-old students in their member countries and partner countries.  This report reflects the extent to which reading has changed since 2000, including the prevalence of digital texts.  It also updates the assessment of student performance in mathematics and science.

Americans and their cell phones (2011)

The Pew Internet and American Life Project conducted a survey of adults’ use of cell phones for such activities as entertainment and retrieving information.
