SuperNet Service Funding Increase
As part of the Alberta government’s commitment to improving broadband connectivity, Alberta Education will be increasing SuperNet Service Funding across the province’s K-12 education sector.
Effective January 1, 2012, SuperNet Service Funding will increase to $700 per month per site to cover the cost of at least 20Mb/s bandwidth. This increase reflects an evolving reality in schools where the demand for bandwidth is growing considerably, due to the proliferation of online content, such as streaming video from LearnAlberta.ca and other external sources, and a steep increase in the number of computers and other devices used in schools to support learning.
Information has been provided to the IT Jurisdiction Technology Contacts on the steps that need to be taken to complete the bandwidth increase. For further information, contact Dave Hauschildt, Senior Manager Standards & Strategic Relationships, at Dave.Hauschildt@gov.ab.ca or by phone at 780-415-0824 (Dial 310-0000 first for toll‑free access in Alberta).

Provincial Approach to Student Information Update
Implementing Clauses 11 and 14 of the Provincial Approach to Student Information (PASI) Usage Agreement
The Provincial Approach to Student Information (PASI) Usage Agreement was developed to clarify the responsibilities of both Alberta Education and school authorities and to ensure that each school authority has appropriate security, privacy measures and processes in place to protect student information contained in PASI. All schools must comply with its security provisions by August 31, 2013 or the date on which the school authority implements PASI functionality through its student information system, whichever comes first. The Usage Agreement needs to be signed and returned to Alberta Education by December 31, 2011.
Some school authorities are finding it difficult to independently assess if their Student Information Systems (SIS) product meets Clauses 11 and 14 of the PASI Usage Agreement (i.e., the need to ensure that the SIS provides the necessary security, privacy and audit requirements).
