1. Why was Alberta's Home Education Regulation updated?
Provincial regulations are regularly reviewed to ensure they continue to meet the needs of our evolving education system.
The Regulation has been updated to clarify responsibilities of parents and associate school boards and associate private schools, and to further the province's commitment towards home education.
2. Who was consulted?
The review of the Home Education Regulation began in January 2003 and involved extensive consultations with school authorities, education organizations, parents, home education organizations and other interested Albertans.
3. What changes have been made to the Home Education Regulation?
Home education roles have been clarified, such as the associate school board's or private school's responsibility to offer support to parents and the parent's responsibility for their student's education program.
The updated Home Education Regulation also balances the need for flexibility with accountability. Parents, associate school boards and associate private schools will continue to choose how to evaluate the performance of their home educated students. Associate boards and associate private schools will continue to independently evaluate the progress of home educated students in parent-designed programs.
School choice is a key strength of our province's education system. This updated Regulation will ensure home education in Alberta continues to be a meaningful option for students and their parents.
4. When did the updated Regulation come into effect?
Our province's updated Home Education Regulation came into effect on August 1, 2006.
