To develop and provide educational initiatives and projects related to the 8th IAAF World Championships in Athletics that address the program of studies and meet the needs of Alberta students.
Various projects and initiatives have been planned to "involve" Alberta students and their teachers with the 8th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Student learning outcomes, as developed by the 2001 Championship in Athletics education committee, for all initiatives are:
Students will:
- be aware of, and gain an understanding of, the 2001 Championships in Athletics; the event(s), the countries and the people involved
- be aware of, value and have the opportunity to demonstrate the concepts of fair play, teamwork leadership, communication and volunteer skills
- recognize that participation in physical activity (athletics) can lead to multi cultural and international understanding
- appreciate and understand that participation in physical activity has benefits for lifelong health and wellbeing
- participate in athletic events, (track and field: run, jump and throw events).
- A K-6 and 7-12 integrated lessons print resource that supports implementation of the Alberta Program of Studies and integrates activities related to the outcomes and the concepts of the 2001 Championships in Athletics. Resource themes are Global Friendship, Well-being, Citizenship and Run, Jump, Throw. The resource - Our Schools in Action - provides lessons that address many different subject areas and was distributed to all Alberta schools. French translation of both resources occurred. The French resources were distributed to all francophone and immersion schools in the province. All resources are still available for purchase from the Learning Resources Center
- A K-12 print resource that supports implementation of the Alberta Physical Education program of study and focuses on running, jumoing and throwing skills. The Run, Jump, Throw and Away We Go! resource was sent to all Alberta schools. This resource is also available for sale from the Learning Resources Center
- This website was created where teachers could access the resources and updates of initiatives. This site, along with links to 2learn.ca, provided PDF (Adobe® Portable Document Format) files of all the resources, posters and an additional resource not produced in print - Run, Jump, Throw - A Play Day. All resources support implementation of the Alberta programs of study, using this event as a theme. A part of this site was a student component called "Active Living Log". This component of the site provided an opportunity for students to record activity they were involved with, addressing Physical Education General Outcome "D" - active living in the community as well as various ICT outcomes. The log was created on a database where information was stored until students returned to add more.
- A collaborative project occurred as a result of common goals in relation to student learning to student learning and physical activity. Alberta Community Development promotes "Summeractive" an advocacy program intended to encourage Canadians to participate in physical activity. The Alberta initiative agreed to use the "run, jump and thorw" theme for this year. A resource was developed that made use of components of the run, jump, throw and... away we go! resource.
- A passport was developed for all Alberta grade 3, 4, 5 & 6 students. The intent of the passport was to encourage participation in various running, jumping and throwing events, global friendship, active living and well-being activities both at school and in the community.
- Workshops for teachers were provided throughout the province. The focus was on either resources or training about running, jumping and throwing techniques.
- An award was created as a result of Edmonton 2001 sponsors EPCOR and ESSO, for school jurisdictions to recognize one high school student who demonstrates athletic excellence, good sportsmanship and models an active lifestyle. The award recipient received two tickets to the championships for one day and one night accomodation in the metro area.
