Competition - Outcome A (10-30)-8
||Directions for Jive Dance
Students may have learned many basic jive moves
in a previous class or year. Sample moves that may be included in
learning the basics are the basic step with a partner, ladys
underarm and back, brush-off, dishrag, and the slide. (Irene to
Additions to the dance could include more difficult
moves such as the octopus and the leg pull through. Faster music
could be added as well.
At this stage, students should be introduced to
the different hand connections while doing moves, rather than just
the basic right to left hold. In addition, students at this level
will be expected to perform a number of basic moves in combination
without resorting to the basic step following each move. For example,
the students could be asked to perform the following routine:
- Two basics to
the slide - to the brush off - to the last part of the ladys
underarm turn to two basics again. Perform in time to the
- Now perform the same
routine as above and add the octopus at the end.
- Demonstrate the leg
pull through for students who have enough upper body strength
to perform this move.
Once students have been provided with numerous
possibilities and combinations and practice time, announce the Jive
Competition requirements. Students can choose a partner to perform

Instruct students that once they have decided
on their routine, the same routine can be repeated until the end
of the song or they can repeat parts and add new variations throughout.

These are clues that you have reached the outcomes
Students perform a jive routine containing all
the requirements. The routine is performed to a chosen piece of
music in front of others.
Students are able to write out their routine and
hand it in before they perform.
