News and Events
- Memorandum of Understanding for First Nation Education in Alberta On February 23, 2010, the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta and the Assembly of Treaty Chiefs in Alberta signed an historic Memorandum of Understanding for First Nations Education in Alberta. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) provides a common vision for strengthening learning and educational success for First Nation learners in Alberta. The MOU provides a framework for collaboration to support a range of education-related issues including parental and community engagement, Treaty and cultural awareness, and on-going work on tuition and education service agreements. - First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education Partnership Council , October 2009
A launch of a new First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education Partnership Council is taking place at 3:00 p.m. on October 13, 2009 at Government House in Edmonton. The creation of this Council establishes, for the first time, a formal partnership on FNMI education between the Government of Alberta and Alberta’s First Nation and Métis organizations.
- Learning Together for Success
Thank you to everyone who attended the 2009 Learning Together for Success conference. The next Learning Together for Success conference will be held in Edmonton in March 2010. The Learning Together for Success conference is an annual conference devoted to First Nations, Métis and Inuit education in Alberta.
This conference provides participants with the most current research in this topic as well as opportunities to hear first hand from First Nations, Métis and Inuit community educators and leaders. This conference is held alternately in northern and southern Alberta and is co-hosted by Alberta Education and an Alberta regional consortium.
- National Aboriginal Day
June 21st has become an important day for Aboriginal Canadians as an opportunity to express great pride in the richness and diversity of Aboriginal cultures and to celebrate this day with family, neighbours, friends and visitors. - Métis Week
The third week in November marks a number of activities celebrating Métis culture in Canada, including events commemorating the November 16th anniversary of Louis Riel's death. In Alberta contact the Métis Nation of Alberta or the Métis Settlements General Council to find out more about Métis cultural events this week and throughout the year.
- Promising Practices to Enhance High School Completion Amongst FNMI Students Conference
In November 2007, a conference was held in Edmonton to provide teachers, school administrators, and central office personnel with practical information, new insights and responsive strategies that support FNMI student success and foster high school completion. A summary brochure captures several of the promising practices identified and shared at the conference.
