Alberta K–12 ESL Proficiency Benchmarks
The revised Alberta K–12 ESL Proficiency Benchmarks (2010) were launched on on November 4, 2010. The Benchmarks were revised based on feedback from the field and from the K–12 English as a Second Language (ESL) Advisory Committee. The revised Benchmarks replace the 2009 draft Benchmarks. Schools currently using the 2009 version of the Benchmarks are encouraged to transition to the 2010 Benchmarks by September 2011.

The Alberta K–12 ESL Proficiency Benchmarks are not just for designated ESL teachers at schools; they are for any teachers with English language learners in their classes. The Benchmarks will assist all teachers in making timely and effective instructional choices that enhance the learning of English language learners. Additional information for use with the Benchmarks will be made available later in 2011.

Professional Development Opportunities
As a result of grants from Alberta Education to support the implementation of ESL, professional development opportunities are being provided in 2010–2011 by the Alberta Regional Professional Development Consortia (ARPDC). Contact the consortium in your region to determine if there are learning opportunities at this time that can support your professional growth plan and implementation.
