Student Language Development Exchange Program
Alberta Education sponsors student exchange programs for high school students studying French (Quebec), German, Japanese or Spanish (Mexico and Spain). In these programs Alberta students alternate between hosting partners in their homes and schools, and traveling to live with their partners, experiencing their homes, and becoming active participants at their schools.

While the focus is on developing language skills, living in a culture and lifestyle different to the one they are used to in Alberta develops coping and interpersonal skills - skills which last a lifetime and are particularly useful for living in our rapidly changing world and workforce.

Students must have completed a 20-level second language program or equivalent before they can participate in an exchange program.

The T. Mikuriya Award in Support of Alberta-Japan Student Exchanges
This program offers awards for up to $1500 for Alberta high school students who study at a high school in Japan. To be eligible, the student must be accepted into an existing Student Exchange Program with a Japanese school (such as the Yamate).

Yamate High School Student Exchange Program
This is a year-long, reciprocal exchange program for students who are studying Japanese. Students attend Yamate High School, a private co-educational school, in Yokohama, Japan and receive special Japanese as a second language instruction as well as attend regular classes at Yamate.

The Alberta student is billeted with a host family in Japan, while a Japanese exchange student is billeted with the Alberta host family and attends high school here.

Yamate High School Student Exchange Program - Short Term
This is an annual program that rotates by region (Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer). In April, approximately 200 Yamate students come to Alberta for two weeks. They are billeted with Alberta families and attend classes in their host school. In July, Alberta students pay a return visit to Japan and stay with Japanese families. All costs in Japan are covered by Yamate High School. This is an excellent opportunity for Alberta students to have a unique international experience and often sparks interest in further Japanese language study.
