As a new Alberta graduate, you must apply online to acquire Interim Professional Certification.
You may apply early, one to two months prior to the completion of your teacher preparation program. You will be issued an Interim Professional Certificate after your program is completed successfully and Alberta Education receives the recommendation of the Dean within your Faculty of Education.
Please note that the Dean's recommendation does not need to be requested by you.
The Dean’s recommendation is valid for ten years; even if you do not apply for your Interim Professional Certificate following graduation, you may still apply for it anytime within ten years of the completion of your program. If you choose to apply for certification after ten years, you may be required to upgrade your qualifications. For more information, please review the section on Currency of Practice.
Please make sure that you have the following on hand:
Tip: If you wish to print your completed application form at a later time, log into TWINS Teacher Registry Self-Service, locate your application, and click the "Details" link to display the PDF form.
Once you have submitted the online part of the application, you must submit additional documents:
Documents are to be mailed to the Office of the Registrar at Alberta Education. Some documents are accepted by uploading a PDF copy of the document through TWINS Teacher Self-Service - review your application's checklist to see if that option is available.
Please note that international cheques are no longer accepted. Do not mail cash.
Upon receipt of the above documentation and an official recommendation from the Dean of the Faculty of Education, your application for certification will be processed. Applications will not be processed if the signed application form, fee and required documentation have not been submitted.
Alberta graduates do not need to submit transcripts for certification purposes. However, Alberta graduates are required to provide their transcripts to Teacher Qualifications Service (TQS) of the Alberta Teachers’ Association for salary evaluation.
You will receive an e-mail confirming your application. This will be sent to the same address you used to set up your Alberta Education account.
Once your signed application and payment is received, an initial review will be completed to determine if any further supporting documents are required. You will be contacted by mail to acknowledge any documents that have been received and inform you of any further documents that must be submitted to support your application.
A letter will be sent to you confirming that your file is complete.
Track the progress of your application by signing into TWINS Teacher Registry Self-Service.
Applications are evaluated in date order from the date that an application is considered to be complete. An application is considered complete when the application payment, and all required supporting documents have been received.
Once your file is complete, your application for an Interim Professional Certificate will be processed. Please allow 20 business days before contacting the Office of the Registrar at Alberta Education.
Application status is not available by phone. Please visit the TWINS Teacher Registry Self-Service site for all matters relating to your application status.
