In the classroom

• A top priority for educators is to ensure that all Alberta students are knowledgeable, understanding and respectful of the rich diversity of First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultures, languages and histories; the importance of Treaties; and the legacy of residential schools. The following resources will help teachers bring to life content in the classroom. 
  • Our Way Is a Valid Way is a professional development tool to help educators deepen their understanding of First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives, histories, cultures, traditional practices, protocols, and languages.
  • Walking Together is a professional development resource providing teachers learning experiences that deepen their understanding of the historical and contemporary issues impacting First Nations, Métis and Inuit.
  • Guiding Voices is a curriculum development tool for developers and evaluators to ensure that First Nation, Métis and Inuit content and perspectives are woven into resources in authentic and respectful ways.
• New information technologies create options for how teachers teach, how students learn and how classrooms look and operate. Visit information & technology toolkits to find out how schools can help support effective decision making for scenarios impacting schools, students and staff. 
• The Guide to Education combines key information and requirements for the operation and delivery of ECS-12 education programs and services in Alberta in a single, convenient reference.
• Canadian copyright law continues to evolve in response to existing and emerging technologies, international agreements, and the need for reasonable balance between the rights of users and the rights of copyright-protected works. Student Health

• Student health information has been collected to assist teachers and administrators in understanding what their responsibilities are under legislation affecting student health. 
• Mental health has a big impact on student achievement and quality of life. Visit our mental health supports page to find out more about promoting mental health in the classroom. 

Professional Development

• Alberta’s Math Bursary Program is a new bursary for pre-service and in-service teachers. The goal of the bursary is to provide funding to encourage eligible current and future Alberta K-12 teachers to take a qualifying math pedagogy course.

Staying on Track

Keeping students engaged in their learning and committed to doing their best can be challenging. The following supports were designed to help students stay engaged and on track for graduation. 

• Alberta Education's has developed information, resources and outreach material on attendance for school leaders, students and parents to promote attendance and create strategies that assist with non-attendance issues.
• Visit our Safe and Caring Schools resource section to access documents that help support Welcoming, Caring, Respectful and Safe Learning Environments that respect diversity and nurture a sense of belonging and a positive sense of self.
• The Alberta Mentoring Partnership provides everything you need, including tips, videos, toolkits, and resources to get started in the classroom this year. For high schools, there are also additional Career and Technology Studies modules available for you to offer specifically created to support mentoring.
