Since the fall of 2015, the Education Act and its proposed regulations have been the subject of an extensive government review. As a result of this review, it has been determined that further discussion and collaboration is required regarding specific policy shifts contained in the Education Act.
As a result, the School Act will remain in effect for the 2016/17 school year.
It is expected that, later in 2016, education stakeholders will be engaged in further discussion regarding education legislation.
The Education Act received Royal Assent in 2012. It specifies goals for Alberta's Early Childhood Services to Grade 12 education system and identifies the roles and responsibilities of the Ministry, school boards, charter schools, private schools, teachers, parents and students.
