Dancing Up a Storm

John Travolta does it. Cinderella did it. Madonna does it. They've all been dancing!

Throughout your life you're probably going to be dancing up a storm. It's a lifetime skill that you'll use on special occasions, at community get-togethers, in your living room, or even on the street.

Many sports include dance movements such as skating, aerobics and football. Football? Yes! You'll be surprised how many games require the finesse of dance-like movements, not to mention choreographed strategies - football included!

As you waltz through this dimension you'll see there are many different forms of dance. There's an expression of dance for almost every form of music you can think of, and popular new dances are created all the time. Years ago young people were bustin' a move doing the Charleston long before moshing, the macarena, or line dancing came along. Of course you can create your own dance any time you like! The possibilities are as endless as the dance steps.

So pick your favourite tunes and step to it as you work on completing at least seven hours of activity in this dimension. Remember that if you're involved in community programs that include dancing or dance lessons, no more than 40 hours can be credited toward the dimension. After all, you're aiming for a variety of experiences to round out your physical education.

Dancing La Vida Loco(motor): Skill Building

Dancing can improve your physical skills including your locomotor abilities (moving around skills, like skipping or jumping), and nonlocomotor skills (moving within one space, like bending or stretching). This dimension is also very aerobic since you're moving continuously when you dance, so your heart and lungs will be working just as hard as your feet. It's also great for learning balance, rhythm, coordination, flexibility, capabilities, possibilities and a whole bunch of other "ilities."
