Scooter Push -
Outcome D (K-3)-5
The children have a partner and share one scooter
between them.
- One child sits on scooter with their legs crossed and shoelaces tied, and holds onto the sides of the scooter.
- The other partner waits until the sitting partner says "ready" and then proceeds to push their partner around the gym at a reasonable, comfortable pace.
- The child who is pushing can never take their hands off of their partner. They must realize that they are in total control of turning, starting and stopping their partner on the scooter.
- Call out "change" every few minutes to switch around the pusher and rider.
- After they have mastered this skill and can safely move around the gym without collision, design an obstacle course to travel through using pylons set in a zigzag pattern. Use plastic golf tubes (placed on the pylons to act as an object they must slide under), or create "alleys" with benches. Students are often very helpful in creating the course.
This activity can also be done by pulling the
rider, but the rider must first agree to which body part can be
pulled (foot, hand). Do not allow children to pull by clothing.
More care must be taken with pulling, as the two children's bodies
are farther apart and therefore the student who is being pulled
has less control.
