Kayak Polo - Outcome A (10-30)-7

Ensure that each student has a kayak and a paddle. (If kayaks are unavailable, students can sit on two or three pool noodles or large floating foam mats.) Divide the students into two teams. Arrange for some sort of goal to hit at either end of the pool, or have the students touch the ball to a specific zone on the pool edge. This prevents the ball from leaving the water. Paddles cannot be used to move the ball in any manner.

How to Play

  • Each team begins with their stern (back end of floating object) touching the end of the pool that they are guarding.
  • The instructor throws the ball into the center and both teams paddle to get the ball.
  • Once a team gets the ball, they pick it up. Players try to pass the ball to move it closer to their scoring end. They can place the ball on their laps and take two strokes before they have to pass.
  • A ball in the water is a free ball for any team to pick up.
  • Each time a goal is scored the team scored against gets the ball at their end.

This game develops the use of basic strokes, balance in the water and the potential to discuss safe boating.

Play this in a calm lake or pond using canoes (and using PFDs).

These are clues that you have reached the outcomes ...

Students are able to maneuver well without tipping.

Students become comfortable with their ability in the pool. They show no evidence of panic.
