Traditionally this game was played on ice or a large open area, but a soccer/football field can be used and body contact WAS allowed.
Warm up
Have the class do some stretching exercises and then run several laps around the soccer/football field to loosen up and get their hearts going.
Body
Divide the class into two teams. Each team will start on their own side of the centre line. Toss or kick the ball into the centre of the field to start the game. The ball can only be played with/on the stick, very much like hockey. No part of the body can touch the ball. There are no off sides and any player can play any position. The object is to put the ball through a preset goal, which can be as wide as a soccer goal. Long ago, this game was played without any rest periods, so the first team to make a goal usually won the game.
Culminating Activity
Have the class do a cool down activity such as another round of stretching. Ask the students how it was to play a game with very few formal rules.
Assessment Strategies
Create and open ended questionaire that could include:
How did you feel about the 'lack of rules' for this game?
Did you have to adapt to anything new about this game?
How did 'teamwork' play a part in this game?
Assessment Strategies
Equipment:
A stick about three feet long with a curve at one end. The curved end should be wider than the handle. A field hockey or floor hockey stick may be used. Any small (4-5 inch diameter) soft ball can be used. Traditionally the ball was made from two circles of hide, stuffed with hair and stitched together.
