Activity/Teaching Strategies
This was an activity traditionally done by some Aboriginal children, to test each other's strength and ability.

Warm up
Have the class do some gymnastic type stretching and exercises.

Body
Divide the class into small groups of 2,3, or 4. Each group will be given one of the sticks. Two players will go at a time. They will sit facing one another with their knees up and feet touching. Each one will form a grip on the stick. They will then try to pull each other on to his/her feet and cause the other one to loose their balance. The first one to cause their opponent to move their feet first, is the winner.

Culminating activity
Divide the class into groups of 4 to 5. Have each member of a group do the stick wrestling with every other member of the group. Once the placings have been determined, eg. first, second, third, etc., group all of the same place finishers together and do the 'round robin' once more to see who is the overall winner of each group.

Assessment strategies
Self-assessment. Create a checklist, which includes:
I learned about my strength Yes_ No_ Maybe_
I enjoyed this activity Yes_ No_ Maybe_
I learned more about balance Yes_ No_ Maybe_
Initiate a discussion on the question: "What made the difference in who won each match?" Look of answers like: weight and size, strength, agility, etc.
Assessment Strategies

Equipment:
I-inch (hardwood) dowel, about 1&1/2 to 2 feet in length. Any number of pieces will do, but do not need more than your class size divided by 2.
