Activity/Teaching Strategies
   Warm-up activity:
-Run to tennis courts
-Stretching together, focusing on the muscle groups used in tennis (legs, arms, shoulders, wrists)
-Students can volley with each other for a few minutes

Introductory activity:
-Teacher explains the main components for gripping the tennis racquet
GRIP:
-"v" between forefinger and thumb on the top right bevel
-fingers and thumb wrapped around the grip
-wrist firm/locked with racquet head above wrist

Activity 1: Students, by themselves, will work on racquet and ball control by bouncing a ball continuously about one foot above the racquet, keeping the racquet strings facing up towards the sky. Then students can bounce the ball higher, about two or three meters, and then begin alternating between short and high bounces. Students can do the same activity using their backhand. Challenge them to see how many consecutive times they can bounce the ball on their racquet head.

Activity 2:
First, teacher explains each of the components of how to do a forehand ground stroke.
FOOTWORK:
-begin in ready position(knees slightly bent and racquet up and in front of you)
-move to the ball
-left foot crosses over so body is parallel to and facing the right sideline while right foot is parallel to baseline
-left foot steps diagonally ahead into the stroke

ARM ACTION:
-racquet arm is pulled back so racquet points to the baseline
-racquet head above wrist and wrist locked
-swing forward parallel to the ground

CONTACT:
-occurs at nearly arm's extension
-ahead of body
-as close to waist level as possible
-non-racquet shoulder facing net

FOLLOW THROUGH:
-across body and up over non-racquet shoulder
-right foot moves up beside left to ready position

Activity:
Using the backboard students can practice ball control on their own by bouncing the ball against the backboard and back to themselves several times. See how many times they can do it in a row. Then take a few steps back and continue to bounce the ball against the wall.

Activity 3:
With a partner, set yourselves up on the same side of the net, a ball tosser near the net while the tennis receiver/hitter standing near the baseline. The partner near the net tosses the ball to the player's forehand side and the player returns it. Do about 10-15 each and then switch.

Concluding activity:
Students can play a fun game with each other.

Assessment Strategies
Teacher notes participation (what kind of effort is he/she putting out), social interaction (kind and courteous to others, volunteers to carry equipment or retrieve balls), improvement of skills (willingness to try to listen to and implement instruction that was given to them)and then gives a mark out of 5 for each class.

Equipment:
tennis balls
