Obtain a tape or CD of Aboriginal music containing a Friendship or Round dance song(s).
Explain that the dance they are about to learn is a social dance from many of Canada's Aboriginal people. Explain Aboriginal if necessary.
Warm up
Play the song for the students and have them listen to the beat of the music. Have the students clap to the beat of the music.
Body
Form the students into a large circle and sit down. Show the step to the students. It is a "Stomp" step. Stomp is a shuffling type of dance. This particular dance is done in a sideways motion and always in a clockwise direction. The left foot is leading, stepping forward and to the side. The right foot is shuffling over to meet or catch up with the left foot. The feet "hit" the floor with just enough impact to maintain the beat of the song. Hand motion will be a pumping action, both at the same time. At a distinguishable change in the beat, the dancers can all move into the centre of the circle and then retreat backwards to the extent of hte circle and continue as before. It does not matter who takes the lead, but all should try to begin together.
Now have all students stand up in the circle, join hands and try the dance.
Culminating Activity
Have the class do the dance for the length of one whole song.
