Snowshoe Fox and Hound - Outcome A (7-9)-7

This activity is played outdoors on a snowy field. Each student will need a pair of snowshoes. The game is an adaptation of the Fox and Hound game that can be played indoors or outdoors.

All students stand in a circle. Have the students play follow the leader as they stamp out a cross by dissecting the circle so that it is divided into four quadrants. Create several circles in the schoolyard so students can be active the entire class. Students work in pairs and ideally, there is a circle for each pair.

Food colouring can be sprinkled on the snow to make the lines more visible. (Students may also use the circles during breaks and after school.)

How to Play

  • Designate one fox at each circle. The other partner is the hound.
  • The hound chases the fox around and through the circle.
  • The fox or hound can change directions at any time and can cut into the circle by running on the lines that make up the four quadrants.
  • Once a hound or the fox is in the circle, he/she can only run on the lines.
  • The students are not allowed outside the circle at all. If students step outside the lines, they are out, and have to join a different circle.
  • The object of the game is for the hounds to catch the fox. Once the hound is successful, partners can switch roles or switch circles to chase a different fox.

Have only one hound and several foxes.
