On September 30, 2017, join hundreds of others across Canada and wear an orange shirt to honour and bring awareness to the experiences of residential school students.

Orange Shirt day began in British Columbia in 2013 when a residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared her story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school. Since then, Orange Shirt Day has become an opportunity for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation.

2017 Orange Shirt Day falls on a Saturday. On September 29, schools and communities can show their support in creating a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment and promoting reconciliation by:

• wearing an orange shirt;
• sharing a photo of yourself on social media using the hashtag #orangeshirtday; and
• participating in events in and around your school and community.
