Orange Shirt Day, September 30, 2018: Every Child Matters
On Sunday, September 30, 2018, join thousands of others across Canada and wear an orange shirt to honour and bring awareness to the experiences of residential school students.
Orange Shirt day began in British Columbia in 2013 when a residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared her story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school. Since then, Orange Shirt Day has become an opportunity for First Nations, governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation.
Since Orange Shirt Day is on a Sunday this year, everyone is encouraged to wear orange to school on Friday, September 28. Join us in showing your support in creating a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment and promoting reconciliation by:
wearing an orange shirt;
sharing a photo of yourself on social media using the hashtag #orangeshirtday; and
participating in events in and around your school and community.
