Government is focused on the priorities of regular Albertans, like making sure our kids have great schools and can get there safely.
Student transportation is an integral part of the education system. Our government continues to support a safe transportation system for approximately 300,000 Kindergarten to Grade 12 students across the province.
Alberta Education made progress to better understand the varied transportation challenges faced throughout the province by working with key stakeholder groups.
We also made it a priority to listen to families and school boards to make sure we update student transportation requirements to make life better for Alberta students.
Before any decisions are made, feedback and ideas from parents, school authorities, and stakeholders was required.
Albertans were given the opportunity to share their thoughts and priorities on the student transportation criteria through an online survey that ran from April 20 to June 15, 2018.
Results from the survey will help determine potential changes to the distance criteria, the mandated service levels, and what safety considerations should be included.
Changes to the criteria are scheduled to be finalized by fall 2018.
This timeline will give parents and school authorities an appropriate amount of time – approximately 10 months – to adjust to the new requirements which will be implemented in the 2019-20 school year.
