Alberta Education completed a review of wellness-related programs of study (K–12 Physical Education, Career and Life Management, K–9 Health and Life Skills) and as a result, developed the Framework for Kindergarten to Grade 12 Wellness Education. This framework outlines the fundamental concepts and inherent values of wellness education and provides guidance for the future development and implementation of K–12 wellness programs of study in Alberta. The framework is holistic, student-centered and meets the needs and priorities of Alberta students living and learning in the 21st century.
Wellness education nurtures the whole child and enhances students' capacity for achieving their full potential—intellectually, physically, socially, spiritually and emotionally. Provincial curriculum development, including the revisions of wellness-related programs of study will support the application of competencies that are based on a strong foundation of literacy and numeracy, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.
Planning is underway to ensure that concepts related to career education, financial literacy, community engagement and volunteerism will continue to be addressed in the Kindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum. More information will be shared when it is available.
