2016 marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Alberta. The Equal Suffrage Statutory Law Amendment Act was passed in April of 1916, giving most women in Alberta the right to vote.
Social studies provides opportunities for students to discuss the contributions of women - locally, nationally and globally – and to explore human rights, including women’s rights, at various grade levels.
Junior high teachers can also organize a classroom presentation from Shirley Lowe, Edmonton's former Historian Laureate, which provides an overview of the people, times and challenges that gave some women the right to vote a century ago. To book a presentation or for more information, please contact the Edmonton and District Historical Society at firstname.lastname@example.org or 780-439-2797.
