2. Muscle Madness - Outcome B(4-6) - 3 muscular strength and endurance

For this activity you can use standard playground equipment and stations with signs that indicate the activities - push-ups, sit-ups, long jump.

Create a circuit of activities that builds muscular strength.

"Today we will be learning more about an area of fitness called muscular strength and endurance. Strength is a measure of the amount of force your muscles can give in a short period of time using all your effort (eg. Weight that can be lifted), and endurance means the ability of your muscles to keep working for a long period of time, repeating that effort many times. We are going to practice activities that help improve both muscular strength and endurance"

Take the students through some warm up exercises explaining the muscles that are being used in each exercise. Example warm up exercises that use a variety of muscle groups:

  1. Progressive Curl- up
  2. Lunge
  3. Seat dip
  4. Front support / reverse front support
  5. Heel clicks
  6. Calf raise

Start the circuit
Demonstrate each activity at each station
Assign the students to groups and to a station. Have each student perform the activities at the station before the entire group moves to the next station. You will need to indicate 30-second intervals for some of the stations, or have all stations complete the activities in 30-second blocks of time.

Guide the students in a discussion during their cool down. Did you find some of the activities hard? Did you feel muscles getting used? Which muscles? When and where in life do you need to use your muscles? Ask students which muscles they were working at each of the activity stations.
