Spotlight on Land-based
Activities
Choose an outdoor activity that you can perform for at least 30 minutes/day.
Of course you'll need to choose activities that are appropriate for the
season - trying to snowshoe in the summer when there's no snow can be
embarrassing! Running or orienteering can be done all year, but these
are best in the summer, or parts of the spring or fall when there's no
danger of slipping on ice.
Always be sure to practice
the correct technique for the activities you've chosen.
Self-challenge Activities
Decide with your teacher which of these activities to complete:
- Map out or invent an obstacle
course to run, hike, ski, or combine with other alternative environment
activities. You might also try setting a course on a wall climb. Have
someone time you as you move through the course. Take a minute to ask
yourself how you'll know if you're improving. Try this activity at least
three more times and check to see if you notice improvement.
- Ski / snowshoe / walk /
run using local trails, school grounds, or while on a camping trip.
- What makes this environment
different from other dimensions such as games or dance?
