Motivation in Motion

Dancing is a lot of fun, but how do you get motivated to do it, or to stick with it until you improve your moves? Why not team up with a dance partner to learn new steps and styles together. Or turn on the radio and dance by yourself any old way you like - no one's watching! Rent a movie with a dance routine and challenge yourself to learn at least 15 minutes of the routine. How about looking for at least one dance to go to this year where you can 'shake a leg,' 'cut a rug,' or 'dance up a storm'? Put your motivation in motion.

Doing it Daily Self-Challenges

Decide with your teacher which of these activities to complete:

  1. When you're doing warm-ups and cool downs, compare and contrast how these might be done differently with various kinds of dancers such as Ukrainian, ballet, Irish or Aboriginal dancers.
  2. Prior to a community or family celebration such as a wedding, school dance, or holiday party, prepare some dances that you will be able to participate in during the big event. Get someone to show you some steps for line-dancing or polka dancing. You'll have a ball!
  3. As a community service take a group of friends or family and perform or introduce dances to senior citizens. Who knows, maybe they were Charleston champions or swing dancers and they'll be able to teach you a few things.
  4. Discuss and demonstrate proper etiquette for dance routines that involve partners. Not swinging your partner too hard is a good example of dance etiquette.
  5. Try dances from various cultures to explore different patterns of movement. Then try dances with different formations, like dancing in a circle of people or line dancing. Now perform a variety of dances for friends, parents or teachers.
  6. Stumped on how to get started? Can you think of three places in your community where you can practice being "footloose"? Is there a dance program offered in the community? Look around. There are always people out there who love to dance and are willing to share their know-how.
