Living Active Through
Intramurals - Outcome D (10-30)-9
Encourage students to participate in the intramural
program through their physical education classes. You may consider
having a percentage of their Physical Education mark dedicated towards
being active outside the class. Before each activity sign-up in
the intramural program, the students learn to play that activity
in the physical education class. Students are provided with a sign-up
sheet in class.
Students are responsible for taking a sign-up
sheet and forming their own teams according to the requirements
specified on the form. They decide who is on the team, whether they
would like to play co-ed, and if they want to enter the competitive
or recreational level. They also choose a team name. Students in
physical education classes often influence others to be on their
team, thereby keeping themselves and others active within the school
setting.

Students give the form to their teacher or the
intramural organizer by a certain deadline. The intramural organizer
designs the tournament play dates and posts them in the gym. Students
then show up on the date their team plays and participation attendance
is taken. Students are to keep a record of their participation dates
and activities in a journal, along with comments about the activity
and whether they would choose to do it again. They could also include
what influenced them to join, and suggest ways to encourage others
to join activities at lunchtime. This journal is handed in at the
end of the semester for a percentage of their Physical Education
mark.
Participation points are kept on computer and
statistics are posted following each activity. This encourages students
to continue participating.
Students place their entries in a journal with
different sections for intramural participation, school teams, community
activities, and other activities they do outside of school.
Awards for the most active male and female participants
in each grade and each activity can be handed out at a school "colour"
ceremony. Awards can also be given for students who served as "active
living" role models.

Students hand in a journal with the required entries by the
end of the semester.
The journals show that students have reflected
upon their choices of activities, and how or if school activities
have influenced their choices of activities in daily life.
