The Importance of a Good Warmup - Outcome D (4-6)-1

Provide warmup stations that are in place before students enter the gym. This will encourage students to participate immediately. Equipment at the different warmup stations could include skipping ropes, soft balls, a balance bench to walk on and jump over, Hula Hoops to "hula" with, or Hula Hoops placed on the floor in a hopscotch pattern for students to jump through.

Introduce the students to a variety of different warmup activities such as tag games, relay type races, skipping rope, walk/run programs, follow the leader games, and indoor/outdoor warmups. Show students appropriate stretches to ensure that they are sufficiently ready for further activity in the lesson.

Whenever possible, link the warmup activity to the lesson. For example, play British Bulldog if you are working on ball skills. This increases the effectiveness of the warmup and allows the students more time to practice the skills they are learning.

Paddle Bat Activities

Explain why warming up and stretching exercises are important. Provide a variety of activities so that the students have choices.

Use warmups in the classroom to stimulate the students before they begin their class work.

As part of a fitness break during the day, have older students circulate around to the younger classes and teach the younger students a warmup routine.
