Interview assignment - Outcome B (10-12)-4

Ask students to clip various images from popular magazines - they could be fashion, fitness or other types of magazines. They will use these during the interviews they conduct.

Divide the class into three groups. Each group will be assigned to interview a different age group, but everyone must conduct an interview. One third of the class will interview people around the age of 8; another third of the class will interview people around the age of 15, and the last third, people between the ages of 30 and 50.

They are to ask and get responses to the following questions:

  1. How do you feel about your physical abilities?
  2. How do you feel about the images you see in the media (show your subject some of the pictures you've collected)?
  3. If you could change one thing what would it be?
  4. Why?
  5. Do you think the images you see in the media affect the way you feel about your body?

They should also note how they would describe the subject and compare that to the way the subject describes himself or herself.

After they have done the interviews, reflect as a group on the findings (do not reveal the names of the people you interviewed, only their ages): Were there differences in body image perceptions at different ages? Did the media have an impact on body image - positive, negative, indifferent?

Did there seem to be more or less of an impact depending on the age group?
