Self Challenge City
To get
the most out of any activity it's important to develop skills, In
a variety of areas. It is also important to make use of the FITT
principle for all of these activities. Doing them once will not
help to develop skills or increase your fitness level.

Develop a plan
and decide with your teacher which of these activities will help you to
reach your goals.
- Use short or long skipping ropes to create various types of skipping
routines individually, with a partner, or in small groups.
- Rent a tape of step aerobics,
boxercise, or any aerobic type activity that interests you. First check
the cover on the tape. Is the instruction provided by someone with physical
education credentials or by a good looking movie star with very little
background in fitness? If the tape is lead by a well-known name, but
is designed and supported by a person who has a fitness background,
you are probably okay. Can you repeat this tape 3 - 4 times/week for
two weeks? Does it get easier? What parts of it get easier? Why? Always
remember to warm-up slowly and start easy! Don't work so hard that you're
over-tired.
- Practice balancing by standing
in front of a mirror. Line your head up with a fixed point in the background.
Now pick up one foot - slowly - but do not let your head move more than
one inch from the focal point used while standing on two feet! (It sounds
a lot more complicated than it is!) If you can do this, try bending
your support leg, still staying within the focal point range. Alternate
feet. This activity helps strengthen your ability to balance which is
pretty important so you don't tip over.
- Demonstrate ways in which
various skills and mechanics are transferred from activity to activity.
For example, how do running skills in long jump compare to sprinting?
Look at the list of
individual activities. Can you find comparisons of similar skills?
- What activities in this
section use throwing as part of the activity? Choose a few activities
that involve throwing and see if you can increase your accuracy, distance,
speed, or power. How are you going to improve your throwing technique?
Can you invent a game in which you throw a ball? If you don't have a
partner can you use a wall?
