Happy
Trails - Outcome A (4-6)-7
Students participate in an extended hike through
a nearby ravine or trail.
Students help plan for:
- Hot, cold, or rainy
weather (bring a hat, sunscreen, extra clothing)
- Water to replenish liquids
- Suitable snack that
is light and does not require preparation
- Appropriate footwear
for the hike
- Rest stops along hike.
Teachers should ensure that there are first-aid
procedures in place and that a first-aid kit is available, as well
as a cell phone, if within range.
Start with a regular walk around the school field
or school property. Try to incorporate hills and different terrain
if possible. On the hike, see if students can identify objects from
A - Z along the route. Record these along the way using recipe cards,
or use the PDF file provided.

Incorporate orienteering into the hike.
Incorporate other curricula such as science or
language arts into the hike.
Have students wear an old sock over their shoe
on the hike. Take a walk through a field during the fall. Upon returning
to the school, carefully remove the socks and plant them to see
what will grow.
Take bikes instead of walking.
Encourage students to bring a parent along for
the hike.
