Broomball - Outcome A (10-30)-7

Divide the students into teams. Each student must have a broomball broom to maneuver the ball, and a hockey helmet for safety. (One ball per game.) Decide on some way to identify one team from the other.

This game is played on ice, but with shoes rather than skates. The idea of the game is to score on your opponents more than they score on you.

How to Play

• Have a goal at either end with a set crease larger than a hockey crease. For safety reasons, only the goalie is allowed in the crease.
• Begin at the middle of the sheet of ice with a "bully", which is similar to a face-off in hockey. Two players from opposing teams place their broom on either side of the ball. On the whistle they lift their brooms from the ice, tap one another’s broom, then return to the ice and tap. This is repeated three times before they can hit the ball to one of their players. Students use a saying like "N H L" or "1, 2, 3" to indicate the three touches before they can contact the ball.
• Students are allowed to propel the ball up the ice with their broom only. No kicking is allowed; however the foot can be used to stop the ball.
• No two line passes are allowed. This ensures lots of short passes while moving down the ice and prevents lifting the broom above the shoulder for slapshots to get distance. Raising the broom above the shoulder results in a one minute penalty and the team plays short-handed.
• Once a goal is scored the game starts again in the middle with a "bully". Bullies can be incorporated at any face-off circle if necessary to keep the game going safely.

For more action, use two balls in one game.

Play without a goalie and have the students aim to hit a pylon inside the crease.

Play on snow if a skating rink is not available
