Jumping
Jungle - Outcome A (4-6)-13
|
Jumping Vertically |
|
Overhand Throwing
|
Using a variety of equipment such as skipping
ropes, benches, non-slip mats/pads, pylons, and balls, create a
"jungle" throughout the play space.
Place the skipping ropes parallel to each other
to signify a river. Students will leap the river. The ropes can
be closer together at one end and further apart at the other to
provide a choice of river crossings.
Use non-slip mats to create lily pads or stepping
stones. Vary the shapes and sizes of the lily pads to provide an
agility challenge.
Benches can simulate fallen trees throughout the
jungle. Students have to cross the tree to get to the next station.
Vary the degree of difficulty by placing some benches with the wide
side up and others upside down with the narrow side up. If using
a jungle gym, benches could also be inclined.
Balls can simulate coconuts. Students throw the
ball and hit a target in order to advance to the next station. To
increase the challenge, include different heights (low, medium,
high), sizes and types of balls, types of throwing action, or distances
to targets.
Once the course has been created, gather the students
and explain how to navigate the jungle. Discuss different ways to
cross the apparatus, and review landing techniques.
Consider having task/station cards for the students.
If you use the cards, ensure that there are several options for
each station so that they have adequate challenges.
Be aware that pre-made cards may limit the students'
creativity. It is easier for them to simply follow the instructions
on the cards.
These
are clues that you have reached the outcomes ...
Students are successfully jumping over the
rivers and from lily pad to lily pad using proper techniques:
- Swinging their arms at 90 degrees
- Landing on the balls of the feet with
knees bent
- Maintaining balance and not leaning too
far forward.
Students are able to hop from one object
to another, taking off from the same foot as they landed on.
Students are able to throw properly and
hit the targets regardless of the ball they use or the height they
must hit. Students transfer their weight as they throw the ball,
and follow through with the throw.
