Wall Chicken Dodgeball - Outcome A (K-3)-11

Overhand Throwing

Dodging

Explain the concept of dodgeball to the children (dodging the ball and dodging people, creating an open space, moving under control). Tell them that today they will be dodging the chicken!

All students need to learn to throw for accuracy and speed. For more information about learning to throw and dodge, click here.

Organize the children into groups of three. Two are against the wall and one stands about two metres in front of them with a rubber chicken. Use the lines on the gym floor or use pylons to designate the sidelines of the "court" for each group of students.

How to Play

  • The child with the chicken throws it and attempts to hit one of the two students below the waist.
  • If successful, the two students switch places and the person who was tagged now becomes "it".

Be sure all the children have a chance to be "it". Stress that all hits must be below the waist! The children may need to practice this throwing skill.

Adjust the distance from the wall according to the students' ability level. Practice dodging and faking skills to apply to this game. e.g., moving around pylons during your warmup, stopping and changing direction everytime you come to a red (specify colour) line on your gymnasium floor.

Play the game with beanbags or balls instead of rubber chickens.

These are clues that you have reached the outcomes ...

The thrower is able to make contact.

There are few collisions.

Dodging is evident.

Faking is successful.
