Octopus
- Outcome A (K-3)-10
All the children are at one end of the gym except
for one student who stands in the center of the gym.
When the center student calls out "octopus" all
the "minnows" must attempt to make it to the other side of the gym
without being tagged. A Tagged minnow must stay right where he/she
was caught and then becomes a standing octopus. (These are allowed
to tag anyone who comes close enough but may not move their feet.)
"Octopus" is called again and again
until all children are tagged. Remember that only the "head octopus"
can run to tag; all others are stationary and become obstacles.
Children must find the open spaces to run in as they try to get
across the gym
Do not use end walls as finish lines. Provide
a slowdown zone by using lines on the floor or pylons.
Vary the locomotor step for this game. For example,
direct the children to gallop or skip. The game can also be played
on scooter boards.
Add "safe" obstacles such as a hula hoop, where
a struggling minnow can take refuge. Only one minnow at a time is
allowed in each hoop. Once another minnow arrives, the first minnow
must leave.
These
are clues that you have reached the outcomes ...
Students understand the concept of the game
and can play with minimal intervention from the teacher.
Students demonstrate control in their skills
at stopping and changing direction.
