What's Up? - Outcome C (10-30)-2

Have the students pair up or triple up as they enter the gym. Explain that while they are doing their warmup jog, they are to discuss what activities they took part in since last physical education class. If the students didn't take part in any activity since the last class, they can discuss what they did in the last class, and why they haven't done anything since then. What factors prevented them from being active? Why do they choose to participate in certain activities?

After the warmup jog, direct the students to form a circle for the stretching part of the warmup. While the students are stretching, each person in turn will tell the class what their partner did for activity since the last class. If time permits, discuss why they took part in this activity and what influenced them to get involved. For those who did not take part in any activity, see if the class can provide support to influence them to be more active. This may include providing solutions to perceived barriers. For instance, "I had to work every day" is a common reason for being inactive. Perhaps the student could walk or ride a bike to work. Or, during their 20 minute break, they could walk for 15 minutes.

On another class day, during the warmup jog, have the students discuss what their parents do for activity. During the stretching portion, discuss factors such as role models who may have influenced the students to become active in their lives.

Students may keep a chart for a week or month and then take turns during a warmup stretch discussing their thoughts about their personal chart.

Students contribute their opinions to the issues related to active living role models.

Students become more aware of how active or inactive they were, and what influenced them to be active or inactive.
