Caterpillar Sit - Outcome C (4-6)-5&6

In groups of 10-12, students are seated on the floor with their legs stretched flat out in front of them, one student behind the other, in a line similar to a train or caterpillar.

Students have to move in close enough to each other so that each student can place their feet just below the hips/quadriceps of the student in front. If this is too uncomfortable, the students may want to try holding on to the legs of the person behind them.

Once everyone has their feet placed in a comfortable position, the group has to work together to try to move across the gymnasium floor like a caterpillar. No hands are permitted to touch the floor, except the hands of the last person in the group.

Each group will have to communicate together and come up with a technique to assist their travels.

Once the students have had a chance to practice the activity, you can organize relays between the groups.

Use scooter boards for students to sit on.

All students can put their hands down for support.

Try combining groups to make larger caterpillars.

These are clues that you have reached the outcomes ...

All students within each group participated and contributed to the discussion on how to make their caterpillar work.

Students were open to suggestions from all group members.

Students worked together to achieve their goal.

Students watched other groups and were able to recognize and adopt techniques that could help their own group.
