Space Awareness Tag Games
- Outcome D (4-6)-3 & 5
This activity can be done indoors or outdoors.
Have students select a tag game, keep away game,
or follow the leader game. Before the game begins, direct the students
to sit in a circle and brainstorm safety considerations that may
be applied to these games.
Safety considerations may include:
- Keep your head up when moving from place to place.
- Scan the play space before the game begins for potential safety hazards such as gopher holes, uneven ground, any extraneous equipment left lying around, chairs, the stage.
- Stop at a designated line or pylon instead of using the walls or stage to stop.
- Take extra precautions and use communication skills when playing a game involving equipment that may get away from you. For example, tell other players to watch out for the rolling ball or flying shuttle.
- Ensure that every student has sufficient space to perform their activity, such as skipping rope.
- Ensure that students take turns when
necessary. Have suitable consequences (such as sitting out a turn)
for those students who endanger others by pushing or displaying
inappropriate behaviour.
- Listen to all the instructions before an activity begins even if you think you know how to play. Some modification may have been added.
Now play the game with safety in mind. Provide
positive feedback for safe movement skills.
Have the Grade 6 students provide the kindergarten
students with a safety orientation day. Students can design safe
games for the younger students to play so they can experiment with
landings, swinging, hanging, and crawling. The older students can
then decide how to best motivate the younger students to follow
the rules as outlined.
At the beginning of the year, have the students
create posters with the playground rules. Posters can be hung around
the school for all to see.
