Join up and decide with your
teacher which of these activities to complete:
- Can you identify a positive
active living role model in your community? You know, that grandma who
still goes bowling every week, the mom who jogs with her baby in the
stroller, or the kid next door who plays road hockey 24 hours a day.
What kinds of qualities make this individual want to keep on being active.
Are any a role model for you? Can you learn from any of their active
living habits?
- Rent a tape of step aerobics,
boxercise, or any aerobic type activity. Check the label on the tape
first. If the tape is designed and supported by a person with fitness
credentials it probably provides safe and useful instruction. Learn
some of the moves then create your own fitness routine to your favourite
music. Teach it to some friends!
- Try to make sure that you
are using respectful behaviour at all times when participating in physical
activity. Make a list of rules that you feel should govern an individual
activity such as walking, running or using a fitness facility. Record
them and add a scale of 1 - 5 showing how often you play by these rules
(1 for "always do" and 5 for "never do"). At the end of three days of
participation in an activity from the activity list, rate yourself as
to how you did using your own scale of 1 - 5. Here's an example of respectful
behaviour while using a local bike path:
- Stay on the right side
of the path except to pass - 1 (always).... 3 (sometimes).... 5
(never)
- Always get the attention
of anyone you are passing so you don't startle them (use a bell
or call out)
- If taking your dog with
you, always keep them on a leash
- Make eye contact with
people you are passing - for your own safety
- Let someone else assess
you using the scale and list you developed.
- Use some of the knowledge
you gained from the activities in this dimension and share it with someone
in your family or neighborhood. Ask them to join you in an activity.
Can you teach them a thing or two? Do you play by the rules? Can you
get them to play by the rules? How will you communicate with them so
they are encouraged to keep or participating?
- Never give up on you! No
matter what the results are from your individual efforts, remember that
every little bit counts when it comes to exercise. You should keep trying,
come back for more, and keep at it. Brainstorm a list of challenges
you have encountered while doing this dimension. Now ask yourself how
you can stay positive when trying to overcome those challenges. Always
show respect for yourself by giving yourself a pat on the back for whatever
exercise you have done.
